Was looking at the amazing work of someone whose skill I greatly admire, and wondered if I should just stop calling myself an artist.

So, a couple day ago, I did some sketches with colored pencils (I wanted to draw, and the c pencils were available), i've drawn recentlt with my usual mechanical pencil, but somehow the colored pencil sketches made me feel better about my skill level. What's up with that?

Been a while. I haven't been working on these much lately, been sketching mostly, trying to not be so picky about how things look and just have fun. But, here's more progress on the cutlass:

There's a good chance nobody who reads this will care, but this, specifically this is what my ray-tracing needed. I'd struggled with how to make a triangle (or cone) tangent to a circle (or sphere) a specific size and distance away from the point. Stumbled upon this studying up on math, feeling like I didn't need to be doing art today :>

I don't know why, but my tablet works in GIMP now! Sure, I'd tried again to get it to acknowledge the pressure, but it kept blanking the settings, looking like it didn't take. Today I went to see if I could use the switch or set a key to act like the mouse button so I could at least use it without the pressure-sensitivity, but instead, it worked ( Read more... )

A while ago, I rediscovered art_skill_trade and actually joined. There's not much activity nowadays, just the occasional post, but they have a long list of links to tutorials (sadly, many are dead) So, every so often I go and look at some. Here are a few I've added a few to my collection of links:

My tablet is hooked up again! GIMP isn't letting me draw with it (I can use it as a pointer, but not draw (the online documentation about it is useless)) ( so I've been using OC). I'm getting used to it again (it's been a while), don't expect it to take all that long, but the lines are still kind of spastic.

A while back, an artist whose blog I follow posted about wanting to rent studio space, not because she needs the space, but to be around other artists. I can understand. I have very little contact with other artists in person, I hardly ever *see* another artist, much less get to talk about art. Two artist guys and I used to talk about art at ( Read more... )

A few days ago, I practiced with the ink tool and inked a pic of a fairy from waay back, even though I don't have the tablet set back up yet. It's a little squiggly, but I was impressed at the smoothness of the tool, and I got better at it as I went on (the near wings were inked first).
